The main standard for security alarm systems is PD6662:2012 - BS8243:2020 and EN50131.
All security, intruder and “Hold Up” alarm systems installed within the European Union must meet fundamental standards, to be accepted by insurance companies and to be allowed to summon a police response. The European standard applicable to Intruder and Hold-Up Alarms is the EN50131 series.
From June 2012, all new intruder and Hold Up alarms have been designed and installed to the EN50131:2006 standard in accordance with PD6662:2010 and BS8243 for police calling systems.
The type of alarm control panel you require depends on:
- Size of your premises
- How the alarm system will be used - a large warehouse may require fewer zones or access points than a medium sized office.
The control panel represents only a small part of the installation cost so PEL can advise you on the features needed to secure your premises effectively.
It makes business sense to choose a system with spare capacity for future expansion or scalability purposes. The PD6662 and EN50131 standards define categories of systems to ensure the design and installation of an alarm system meet the principal objectives identified.
