Sent: 12 September 2011 11:42
To: Debbie Walmsley
Subject: Thanks

Dear Debby, thanks for your swift response to my plaintive bleat to have the PA rack and therefore the fire alarm repaired. The two engineers you sent are worth the money as are you, I would pay you double! Please inform your invoice dept that the invoices are being processed and should be paid soon. I am afraid the invoice for the annual maintenance contract has been mislaid, and I would like to impose on your good will to ask the credit controller to e-mail another ASAP I will have it paid quicker than the builders can cut a cable.

Best Wishes Eddie x x x

What kind of chocs do you like? A small token of my appreciation for you getting this school out of the * * * *

Reading Girls School.Commendation letter from Reading Girl's School

11th December 2009

Dear Mr Faulks,

My name is Charles Ainslie and I am the Business Manager at Reading Girl’s School. We have had a considerable quantity of of work done here at the School, including our new Post-16 Centre, our new behavioural unit as well as the main school itself.

The work has included Fire, CCTV and Access Control, with many changes and orders with very short delivery and installation times required.

I would like to thank Richard Thorn and Mark Snelling for meeting all our requirements, understanding some very vague requests on our part and providing us with a service I cannot fault. All deadlines were met and even now last minute orders are being dealt with.

It gives me great peace of mind to know that my work is made much easier by PEL and these teams in a climate of schools not getting good value service from companies who take our business for granted. Richard and his teams have made us feel that our business is important to PEL, however small the need at times.

I hope this letter doesn’t come across as too gushy, but we really do thank them and PEL for their work here. It has led me to favour PEL in dealing with all our CCTV, Fire and Intruder needs in the coming years.

Yours Sincerely

Charles Ainslie

25th January 2006

Dear Mr Faulks,

Just a quick note to say how much the School appreciated your team’s efficiency and hard work during the two days of installation work, on the 18 and 19 January. As the School was up and running, it was especially difficult for them to do their work. At all times they were courteous and obliging.

Please pass on our thanks to Mr Hood, Mr Fisher and their team.

Yours sincerely,

PEL supplies Syngenta with impressive Audio Visual installation
PEL AV Installation

PEL AV Installation

PEL Services Ltd has recently completed one of its most sophisticated audio visual installations for Syngenta International Research Centre at Jealott’s Hill in Berkshire.

“Bringing plant potential to life” is Syngenta’s purpose statement, which it achieves through world-class science for increased crop productivity, protection of the environment and improvements to health and quality of life.

Syngenta is one of the world’s leading companies with more than 25,000 employees in over 90 countries.  800 of those staff, including scientists and support staff, are employed at the Syngenta International Research Centre at Jealott’s Hill, which is the company’s largest site for new agrochemical R&D and product support.  The site was founded in 1927 and has seen many of the world’s most important crop protection products developed there.  It is home to the biggest glasshouse research complex in Europe, as well as centres dedicated to chemistry, analytical science, bioscience, formulation and product safety.

As with any high tech research facility, by their very nature they are expensive to operate.  Any means of increasing productivity and site usage and decreasing costs without detrimental effect to the quality of the work being conducted is to be welcomed.  At Jealott’s Hill, Syngenta reviewed the site’s amenities and usage and put into place a three part programme to improve on-site facilities, encouraging staff company-wide to make better use of them.

PEL Audio Visual Installation

PEL Audio Visual Installation

The first part of the programme was a Compression Phase, which enabled the exit from ageing and poorly used buildings (some of which date back to the early days of the site) and improve the usage density of remaining good quality building stock.  The second part was a programme to reduce operating costs like consumables, catering, energy use and travel, beneficial for the bottom line and the environment.  The third phase, where PEL fitted in, was in improving the “ways of working” on the site, a key part of which was improving communications.  This isn’t solely an IT issue, but about bringing staff across a large site in different buildings together for greater interaction.  Personal interaction often leads to the generation of new, exciting ideas across the different science disciplines at Syngenta.  Potentially it could lead to new cross discipline solutions, which might never have happened without the chat over a cuppa.

The main focus of improving communications at Jealott’s Hill was on making The Elements Building a central hub of the site.  Already home to the dining room and refreshments areas, as well as some little used meeting rooms, the Elements Building underwent a complete refurbishment, including structural work, and is now unrecognisable from the previous rather tired building and decor from the 1990s.

The new Elements Building is now a light flooded facility which houses an ultra modern coffee shop, large dining room (with alfresco dining for the summer), a gym / multi-purpose room, health and beauty salon and a range of meeting rooms and facilities, large and small.  In fact the building offers eight meeting facilities in total plus informal meeting areas, all run by an on-site dedicated concierge team that takes bookings and sets up the facilities prior to meetings.

Bose Pro Partner Audio Visual Installation

Bose Pro Partner Audio Visual Installation

For Syngenta, the key to getting staff to use the new facilities regularly was not only the design (which certainly has the wow factor), but the combination of quality and ease of use of the meeting facilities.  Clearly the concierge is an important contributor in that but the audio visual technology lay at the very heart of the new development.

Laurie Reynolds, one of the Infrastructure Projects Team at Syngenta, explains: “No pain!  That’s what we wanted.  The AV equipment had to be easy to use and ready to go.  We want to build staff confidence so it’s important they can use the equipment from the very first time.  We didn’t want to have to go through a complex learning process, which people will quickly forget if they don’t use the equipment regularly.”

Following detailed discussions between PEL Services – the chosen contractor for the AV installation – and Syngenta, the decision was made to use a Bose ESP digital system with touch panel control.  As it’s a digital system, all the work setting up the system was done by PEL during installation and commissioning.  The beauty is that staff don’t have to do anything with it apart from adjust the volume control.  It really is that simple.  The other great aspect of such a design is it prevents unwanted interference from curious staff.  “Scientists are naturally curious and like to fiddle,” explains Laurie, “but in the case of the AV equipment, we wanted to avoid this.  The design of the new AV system leaves them very little to fiddle with and that means less potential confusion all round.”

Bose Pro Partner AV Installation

Bose Pro Partner AV Installation

The other important consideration for the AV system was simple connectivity.  Syngenta didn’t want lots of wires everywhere and didn’t want to have people wandering around with different bits of equipment.  PEL has designed the system to accommodate this requirement through, for example, the use of floor boxes embedded flush in the floor; equipment is simply plugged into the socket in the box without any sight of cables connecting to the power supply.  These are located at convenient points in each room with the dining room having two sets – one as a ‘back up’ measure.  Furthermore, the dedicated meeting rooms contain in-built PCs connected to the Syngenta network, so staff don’t need to bring their laptops – or even memory sticks – with them to the meeting, but instead just log in to the system to access their presentation.

To achieve the quality of sound required, PEL Services has installed Bose ceiling loudspeakers in the meeting rooms and a combination of Bose 502 loudspeakers and MD4 base bins in the dining room / auditorium along with in ceiling loudspeakers in the lower ceiling sections.  There is an extensive choice of feeds available including DAB radio, iPod, CD, DVD and Laptop.

Roving microphones have also been incorporated into the system to allow presenters to not only move around but to pass the mic to audience members.

Audio Visual Installation

Audio Visual Installation

The dining room itself is not ‘acoustically friendly’ as it has different height ceilings including a high ceiling space in the middle and hard surfaces which are notorious for distorting sound.  As the room is also used for conferences and major meetings, often with some of the company’s top executives, the sound has to be clear and consistent across the expanse of the room despite these obstacles.  The combination of Bose loudspeakers with the Bose ESP digital system, along with some considerable time spent by PEL balancing the sound, has realised the sound quality required.  PEL took the extra step of returning to site when the building went live to make further adjustments, using a smart system feeding pink noise into a computer, allowing PEL to set up and just EQ levels for the microphones.

The sound system in the dining room has been linked to one of the larger meeting rooms upstairs to act as an overspill facility.  People in the meeting room can not only hear the speaker and any audience participation from the dining room but have a microphone to enable two-way communication.  They can also see the live presentation.  As if that wasn’t enough, the presentation can also be recorded and / or be relayed across the world live.

In terms of the visual facilities in The Elements Building, the main dining room benefits from a large retractable screen and a projector.  The meeting rooms also have projectors and 3M electronic whiteboard to enable staff to have technical meetings in real time with colleagues in other parts of Business worldwide.

Bose Audio Visual Installation

Bose Audio Visual Installation

The different meeting rooms upstairs are very flexible, allowing for multi-purpose use and set up; for example, two of the rooms are able to form one larger facility and have their audio systems linked together.

One specific meeting room however has been singled out for special treatment, featuring high end AV equipment such as Blu Ray DVD.  This room is in a boardroom style and is ideal for impressing visitors.

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a stand-alone audio system in the furthest room that has been designed for multiple purposes, including an exercise facility and as a Project room.

The Elements Building at Jealott’s Hill was recently opened by Princess Anne as part of a big family day for staff.  It is hoped that not only staff at the site will use it extensively – which they already are – but also Syngenta staff worldwide.  In fact, the BBC has already made use of it for a recent Question Time.

The Elements Building is a truly impressive facility and shows what quality and flexibility can be achieved in an audio visual system, without frightening the users.

Due to the complexity of the system a Crestron Control with Wireless Touch Panel was included within the design and PEL’s in house programming team provided a user-friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface) enabling easy access to the system.

With guidance from the Deputy Headmaster on operational requirements, PEL programmed set commands that would automatically switch the systems to the correct state for events such as Stage Performance, Live Bands, Recording, Assembly and Theatre by a simple press of a button. Crestron controls Stage Lighting Dimmers, DMX Signal Routing, Data & Video Projectors, Projection Screens, BSS DSP Audio Processor, Kramer VGA & Video Matrices, DVD Players and the Drama Suite’s House Lighting System.

The school has already staged many high class performances and the pupils are set to continue achieving high standards with the future productions that they have planned and both pupils and staff are enjoying the full functionality of the  AV package that PEL has installed.

With a saving of over £42,000 from the original design set out by the consultant, PEL has delivered all the required disciplines above and beyond the schools expectations and delivered a system that was on time, within budget and fit for purpose.

State-of-the-Art for Art Gallery

December 6th, 2010
IMAGO Art Gallery

IMAGO Art Gallery

When you have a space that is used to exhibit valuable works of art, it’s vital you present that work in the best possible way and, just as importantly, you protect it from all eventualities.

IMAGO art gallery in the heart of London’s art centre was faced with this challenge when it underwent a refurbishment in 2008.

Launched in 2007, IMAGO art gallery aims to be an international point of reference for Italian art.  In addition to showing established artists from the mid eighteenth Century onwards, IMAGO’s main focus will be on contemporary art and will showcase young artists destined for future accolades.

To present its artists’ work in the best possible setting, the gallery was completely refurbished in 2008.  With the refurbishment came a need for new fire and security systems to protect the precious contents and for audio visuals systems to help present them at their best.

Specialist contractor PEL Services Ltd. designed, installed and commissioned state of the art audio visual, fire detection and security systems into this fabulous new contemporary art gallery.

The sophisticated new audio visual systems installed feature the very latest technology but have been designed by PEL to be incredibly easy to use.  A Bose Professional Freespace 3 multi zone, multi floor sound system was installed for superb sound quality together with a Crestron control system for complete flexibility and ease of use.  Each floor of the gallery can play completely different music allowing the gallery space to be utilised to the maximum.

Music can be played via the five disc CD player installed or using the iPod docking bay -simply drop an iPod into the unit and immediately play music throughout the system direct from it.

In addition to the sound system, a 60″ HD ready plasma screen has been installed in the reception area.  This takes feeds from a variety of sources, including Sky Italia and HD.

IMAGO Art Gallery

IMAGO Art Gallery

The systems – as well as the LED lighting – is controlled using a Crestron system.  A Crestron touch screen control unit is located in the offices on the third floor.  Alternatively, the systems can be operated via the PCs in the gallery which have been installed by PEL with Crestron control software.  An extremely clever piece of software, it is even able to replicate the iPod experience on screen by providing a graphical interface that duplicates the iPod display whilst offering an enhanced view.  The expanded view displays multiple sortable fields such as artist name, song title and CD title on a single screen.

IMAGO Special Assistant Riccardo Bigi explains the decision to install such a state of the art audio visual system: “as well as works of art, we show installations and some come with music.  We also have parties here to launch events and multimedia presentations.  We needed a good quality sound system.”

To protect the valuable contents of the gallery, PEL Services designed, installed and commissioned a fire detection system featuring Hochiki ESP analogue addressable detectors and an Advanced Electronics control panel.  Security on site includes a Menvier intruder alarm system; Paxton Net 2 access control; BPT Video Door Entry with one external unit and five internal handsets; and an extensive CCTV system featuring Mitsubushi front end with 2Tb hard disc drive unit for recording, Gants day / night camera and two external IR cameras.

IMAGO Art Gallery

IMAGO Art Gallery

Quality ran throughout the systems design and installation work carried out by PEL Services and great care was taken to ensure the integrity of the five storey listed Victorian building.  Its listed status meant that PEL had to careful plan the wiring of the new systems to avoid damaging the fabric of the building, using existing apertures to put wiring through wherever possible and, in one instance, even lifting the floor to lay cabling underneath it.

IMAGO are delighted with the final installation: “We were impressed with PEL from the start” states Riccardo.  “Following the architect’s recommendations, PEL presented to us very well and we had confidence in them.  They have been absolutely excellent and their Project Manager was one of the best contractors we have ever worked with.  They met any request and any needs we had.”

Norwich Bus Station

Norwich Bus Station

Norwich bus station is the most advanced of its kind in the country, with state-of-the-art ticket machines and real time passenger information.

On average, the bus station sees 7,800 bus movements, 200,000 passengers boarding and the information centre helps 21,000 people per week.

The bus station cost £5m to build. The development was part of the County Councils £9.5m Government funded scheme to improve the bus network in and around Norwich. The Public Transport Major Scheme provides a better network of bus lanes around the city, public transport interchange at the railway station, ticket machines and improved passenger information and waiting facilities.

PEL was pleased to be chosen to provide the passenger information system due to their proven expertise in providing sound solutions.

The specification required announcements, both live and recorded, to be broadcast to any combination or all of the twelve bus stands along with music.

Norwich Bus Station Touchscreen Software

Norwich Bus Station Touchscreen Software

For ease of use, touch screens located in key areas provide a graphical representation of the bus station and enable control of the system. The PC based front end stores and routes any number of stored messages to the bus stands, along with storing over a 1000 hours of music. Automatic operation of stored messages and music may be interrupted at any time for live announcements to be broadcast.

After amplification, using proven Cloud multi-amplifiers in a convenient single housing, the loudspeakers used were specially designed and commissioned by PEL in cooperation with Macemain, the bus stand manufacturers, to fit into their vandal-resistant housings.

Being PC based, the system is infinitely expandable and adaptable, allowing for changes of stored messages and music used. The system will also allow for ‘construct messaging’ where key words may be assembled into a message and broadcast.

BBC Monitoring protected by PEL Services

July 26th, 2010
Caversham Park

Caversham Park

PEL Services Limited has completed the installation of a site-wide Public Address and Voice Evacuation system for BBC Monitoring at Caversham Park near Reading.

BBC Monitoring provides a round-the-clock study of TV, radio, press, internet and news agency sources worldwide – a valuable resource for governments, NGOs, analysts, academics, multi-nationals, journalists and individuals.  It has operated from the house at Caversham Park for almost 70 years, although the house itself has existed for some 150.  Whilst not as old as the house itself (!), the Public Address and Voice Evacuation system was reaching the end of its usable life and no longer served all the areas that were added in recent years.

PEL was deemed to offer a cost effective solution and was awarded the contract to install a new system throughout the facility, providing the added benefit of its detailed site knowledge since installing a system during refurbishment of the New Operations Room two years previously.  Knowing the system would need to be extended site-wide at some point in the near future, PEL selected the Bosch Praesideo Public Address and Voice Evacuation system as it not only provided the quality and facilities required at the time but it was readily expandable.

PEL has now extended the Bosch Praesideo system throughout the entire Caversham Park site, incorporating 400 voice alarm loudspeakers across 16 interleaved loudspeaker zones.  The system is fully compliant to BS 5839 Part 8, the code of practice for the design, installation and servicing of voice alarm systems.

PEL completed the installation and commissioning work at Caversham Park with minimal disruption to the building and staff – an important consideration for the BBC.  The bulk of the work was undertaken during office hours but, in some areas where access was not practical during the day, PEL worked through the night.

Clark Hunter, Building Engineering Supervisor for BBC Monitoring, is pleased with the outcome: “PEL has provided an excellent service and have always been sympathetic to our requirements”.

Thankfully the Public Address and Voice Evacuation system hasn’t had to be used in an actual emergency but is tested weekly in line with best practice

For over 35 years PEL Services Limited has been a leading UK systems company designing, supplying, installing and commissioning sound, fire, security & communications systems.  In addition PEL provides a range of service agreements including routine maintenance and fully comprehensive cover, on third party equipment as well as PEL systems throughout the UK and Eire.

Scotstoun Stadium

April 30th, 2010

Scotstoun Stadium

PEL Services Ltd., one of the UK’s foremost providers of commercial sound and communication systems, has completed the contract to supply and commission a substantial voice alarm and public address system at the newly refurbished Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

Scotstoun Stadium has benefited from a £18 million refit ahead of the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014.  The revitalised stadium features new 5000 seat grandstands, indoor athletics training facilities, track and fitness suite, along with a renovated 400m track.

With these world class new facilities, Scotstoun Stadium required state of the art safety systems and turned to PEL Services which has extensive experience in this field.

After careful consideration, PEL Services chose a Bosch Praesideo digital public address and emergency sound system which is fully monitored and provides excellent audibility as a result of its ability to process and communicate both audio signals and control data entirely digitally.  The system uses fibre optic cabling which ensures signal integrity and allows considerable distances to be covered – ideal for the stadium environment.

Praesideo has been used with Bosch and Bosch Electro Voice loudspeakers throughout the stadium for total clarity.  The system has a variety of audio feeds installed by PEL, including an audio rack with CD players for broadcast of music to any selected zones or ‘all call’, digital messaging of security announcements, chimes, time signals etc, a radio microphone for trackside interviews and standard microphones at reception, events control and the commentary booth.  In fact as many as 28 different uncompressed audio signals can be broadcast simultaneously using this state of the art system.

To further enhance the system, induction loops have been installed by PEL Services in the meeting / press suite, on the club deck, at reception and all ticket office counters.  These systems are designed to reduce background noise and improve clarity of sound for hearing aid wearers.

The Praesideo racks have been installed by PEL in the main equipment room for easy access by authorised personnel.

A fully programmable system, PEL has interfaced the Bosch Praesideo with the stadium’s fire alarm system and has incorporated a fire officer’s microphone for added safety.
